Surface Pumps

Surface pumps are electrically driven pumps designed to be installed outside the liquid being pumped. Unlike submersible pumps, they operate above the liquid source, drawing fluid through a suction pipe and delivering it under pressure to the point of use or storage.
Since 1971, GMP Pumps has manufactured surface pumps, offering a range that meets a wide variety of application requirements, from simple water transfer in domestic settings to high-flow industrial installations, including potentially explosive environments and applications involving non-conventional fluids such as diesel fuel.

How Does a Surface Pump Work?

The operating principle is based on converting electrical energy into the kinetic energy of the fluid. The electric motor drives an impeller inside the pump casing. The centrifugal force generated by the rotating impeller pushes the liquid towards the outlet, creating negative pressure at the suction inlet and continuously drawing more fluid from the source.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Surface Pumps

What is the difference between a surface pump and a submersible pump?

A surface pump is installed outside the liquid and draws it in through a suction pipe. A submersible pump, on the other hand, is immersed directly in the fluid being pumped. The choice depends on the depth of the source, accessibility for maintenance and the type of liquid.

How deep can a surface pump draw water from?

Under optimal conditions, the theoretical suction lift limit for a surface pump is approximately 7–8 metres of water head. JET models equipped with an ejector can overcome this limitation, achieving suction depths of up to 25–30 metres.

Can surface pumps handle slightly dirty liquids?

Models equipped with an open impeller, including standard and semi-trash versions, are designed to handle water containing small suspended particles. For sludge, liquids containing larger solids or abrasive fluids, specific semi-trash versions are available. Alternatively, we recommend contacting GMP Pumps technical support for assistance in selecting the most suitable model.

Which version should I choose for marine applications or saline environments?

For marine applications or use with brackish water, the marine bronze version is required to provide long-term resistance to chloride-induced corrosion.

Are GMP surface pumps available in single-phase and three-phase versions?

Yes. Most models are available with both power supply options: single-phase 230 V for domestic and light-duty applications, and three-phase 230/400 V or 400/690 V for industrial and professional applications.

What does ATEX mean for a pump?

ATEX certification indicates that the equipment has been designed and certified for safe operation in potentially explosive atmospheres, in accordance with European Directive 2014/34/EU. It is required for equipment used in installations where flammable gases, vapours or combustible dust may be present.

Can I receive technical support to choose the right model?

Yes. The GMP Pumps technical team is available to assess your application requirements and recommend the most suitable model. You can contact us through our contact form.
